| The alewife Irwin is named in honor of the Ipwich River Watershed Association (IRWA). In addition to organizing and participating in the volunteer river herring counts at the Ipwich Mills Dam fishway, the IRWA team has been very engaged and active in this study, and are very enthusiastic about helping their river support a thriving herring population. Irwin is a native upstream migrating fish, caught in the fish trap in Ipswich Mills Dam on April 23. He was released above the dam, and from that point he continued on his way upstream. We located him once, in the area around Rte 97, during a manual tracking survey. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||

| April 23, 7:00 pm: Irwin is netted from the Ipswich Mills Dam fishway trap and, along with 14 other natal fish, is tagged and released at the trapping site. He is part of our first release group in 2007. April 24, 4:25 am: Irwin is heard by the receiver at Site 2, near the Ebsco building, which possibly means he spent the night near the release site. April 24, 5:02 am: Less than an hour after we first hear Irwin at Site 2, we find he has started his upstream movement and is already at Site 3. April 24, 10:27 am: After navigating his way past the railroad crossing and some swift moving waters, Irwin is heard for roughly a half hour at Site 3, just downstream of the Mill Rd bridge. April 24, 12:32 pm: Continuing his upstream journey, we only briefly hear Irwin at Site 5--in just over a minute he's zooming past this area of the river. April 24, 4:18 pm: Our receiver at Site 6, Willowdale Dam, doesn't pick up Irwin as he passes the dam sometime in the early afternoon, but we know he's made it over the dam in just a few short hours, because we hear him at Site 7, just upstream of the horse bridge, where he navigates through the slow moving waters in about 15 minutes. April 24, 7:15 pm: The sinuous section of the river in the Audubon sanctuary slows Irwin down just slightly--it takes him just under 3 hours to reach our receiver near Bunker Meadows. He ramains in the vicinity of this receiver until about 5:00 am on April 25: maybe he likes the slow moving water, or maybe he's found his way into Bunker Meadows pond. April 28, 11:18 am: Though we haven't heard Irwin with our stationary receivers since the morning of April 25, we locate him during a manual tracking survey near Rte 97, upstream of the Audubon sanctuary. April 29, 12:57 pm: During another manual tracking survey, we locate Irwin again. He is still in the ponds that form near the bends of the river around Rte 97. April 29, 10:34 pm: Irwin has started moving downstream. After hearing him earlier in the day near Rte 97, he made his way down to the Audubon receiver near Bunker Meadows, Site 8. April 30, 1:33 am: Irwin continues moving downstream through the night, reaching Site 7 near the horse bridge and zipping through its range in only three minutes. April 30, 3:02 am: Shortly after leaving Site 7, Irwin reaches Willowdale Dam. Though many of the stocked fish are here, Irwin doesn't appear to slow down at all. In only 15 minutes it appears he is past the dam, out of range of the Site 6 receiver, and continuing on his way downstream. April 30, 3:32 am: Irwin picks up the pace, and moments after passing Willowdale Dam at Site 6, he's already passing Site 5. April 30, 4:12 am: Not showing any signs of slowing down, Irwin passes under the Mill Rd bridge and is picked up by the receiver at Site 4. April 30, 4:55 am: Leaving the swift moving reaches above the railroad bridge, Irwin enters the slower area near Site 3. But he doesn't show any signs of slowing down now! April 30, 5:05 am: In only ten minutes, Irwin has reached Ipswich Mills Dam and our receiver at Site 2. This is the site where we released him about a week ago. Maybe Irwin isn't ready to leave just yet, because the next time we hear him... April 30, 6:04 am: ...he's back upstream near Site 3. He stays in the vicinity of this receiver for an hour and a half, then slowly begins heading downstream again. April 30, 8:32 pm: It takes nearly half a day for Irwin to cover the same section of river he passed through in only ten minutes just a short time ago: we hear him late in the day at Site 2. This slow moving and broad area of the river may deserve some exploring on Irwin's part. May 1, 9:21 am: In the morning, Irwin is picked up again by our receiver at Site 3. He's stayed. He stays in the range of the receiver for about an hour, but doesn't stray too far. Later, during manual tracking in the afternoon, we hear Irwin, along with some of our stocked fish, in an area between Sites 2 and 3. May 2, 7:47 pm: During a morning of manual tracking between the Miles River confluence and Ipswich Mills Dam, we find Irwin at 11:24 hanging out near a patch of submerged vegetation. After this, he moves downstream again, where our Site 2 receiver at Ipswich Mills Dam picks him up--sometime around 7:50 he passes over the Ipswich Mills Dam. May 2, 8:02 pm: Irwin is heard by the final receiver in our array, at Site 1 just downstream of Nancy's Pond. This is the final time we hear Irwin in the river. |
