The alewife Kristen is named after Kristen Ferry, Aquatic Biologist II, of the Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries, Annisquam River Marine Fisheries Field Station, Gloucester. I have known Kristen since 2001 when I first worked for her at the DMF, and I worked under her again from 2005-2006. Kristen has helped shape many aspects of this study and encouraged my involvment in it prior to becoming a graduate student at UMass. Kristen the river herring was captured in the Ipswich Mills Dam box trap on April 23 and released there after tagging. She was last seen by the stationary receiver at Site 7, just downstream of the Great Wenham Swamp, on April 24, 2007 at 6:14 pm.

April 23, 7:00 pm: Kristen is captured in the box trap near Site 2 (Ipswich Mills Dam). After being tagged, Kristen was released at the trap. She spends the first night out of range of the receivers, then begins her way upstream.
April 24, 10:57 am
: Kristen arrives in the morning to  Site 4; due to higher water levels she was able to pass by Site 3 undetected.
April 24,1:06 pm
: Kristen continues her way  upstream, arriving to  Site 5 in the early afternoon. The river here is deep and somewhat narrow, and Kristen makes it past the range of the receiver in just two minutes.
April 24, 6:14 pm
: Due to problems with the receiver at Site 6, Kristen gets past the Willowdale Dam undetected. She arrives to the next upstream receiver, Site 7, in the early evening. This is the last place Kristen is heard by a receiver.
